Back to the Mac Media Event
What a day for Apple fans worldwide…
Apple have held there media conference we have all been waiting for and now we have some very exciting news. A brief overview is listed before and there will be several other blogs to follow with more detail on each item.
Some very exciting news from Mr Jobs, we have a brand new edition of iLife ’11 with some amazing features, the brand new Macbook Air, OS X 10.7 Lion, FaceTime for Mac and App Store for OS X.
We could hardly contain ourselves reading the news, some great things to get our teeth into here.
iLife '11 New feature set
Firstly iLife ’11: iPhoto has a new fullscreen mode for better viewing of your photos, new automatic slide show, automatically pulling in photos from Facebook and Flickr, and lots more. These are some amazing features and a lot of the interface is taking a step closer to the look of the iOS seen on the iPhone and iPad.
Next iMovie ’11: One-step effects, people finder, news and sports themes, movie trailer creation. One-step effects. Select a video segment for instant replay at various speed options. Temporary “snapshot” freezing of video with Ken Burns effect in video. Complex editing with just a few clicks. This really is bringing video editing even more to the consumer, achieving the same effects and outcomes as something as high end as Final Cut but for the masses. One of the best new features seen in iPhotos last edition was Faces this is now native in iMovie this is some fantastic technology.
Finally Garageband: Flex Time, Groove Matching, new guitar amps and effects, new guitar and piano lessons, “How did I play?” Groove matching is very exciting it is designed to be a spell check for garage band. So you set one of the beats as the groove it will then bring the other beats in the piece of music in line with it. Again bringing music creation in line with movie creation, making it accessible to the masses and letting everyone create some music, musically gifted or not.
FaceTime for Mac application
FaceTime for Mac! What a feature, we have been waiting and praying for a feature like this from the moment it was announced in iOS 4. We have had the functionality for a while with iChat and on the iPhone but no integration of the two, now we have FaceTime for the Mac application, it is available to download today from Apples website and changes it’s rotation dependent on the orientation of the iPhone or iPod. We have already downloaded it and it’s brilliant. It integrates with your Address Book and MobileMe out of the box.
Here comes the big one OS X 10.7 “Lion”, Leopard was the best OS the world had ever seen, Snow Leopard was a refined and optimised version of this, it brought a few new features but a lot of back end work had gone on to make sure the user experience was second to none. Now with Lion some new features! Apple are taking a step to narrow the gap between the Mac OS and the mobile iOS.
There will be an App Store for the OS bringing the wonders of iOS 4 to the desktop, you will still be able to use and install applications as you always have but you will have the one click install and update in one go option that the App Store brings.
“Launchpad” A home screen for the OS that will allow you to launch your apps downloaded from the AppStore just like on your iPhone, iPod and iPad.
Full screen Apps, bringing some features of iPhoto native to the OS bringing the wonders we love from iOS 4 straight to the desktop.
We then find out that not only will the App Store be in Lion it is also coming to Snow Leopard within the next 90 days! Brilliant, more information on this to follow.
New Macbook Air
Steve Jobs then decides to take the make the void between the iOS and OS even less but in the form of hardware too. The new Macbook Air! Apple have managed to take the best features that we know and love with the iPad and bring them to a more powerful device that is designed for work the Macbook Air. The new device is available in a 13.3″ and 11.6″ varient.
At the thickest point it will be 0.68″ and at the thinnest point 0.11″ it has a better quality screen than the Macbook Pro! At an amazing 1440×900. They have completely done away with a hard drive, not even a SSD in sight. Now it is a flash chip straight on the logic board like the iPad. We are talking faster, quieter and battery battery life. It also means it can be put to sleep and re awakened in a flash. It comes in 64GB/128GB and 256GB varients all with 2GB RAM, 7 hours battery life and 30 days standby time. It is brilliant, a truely mobile business device for on the road.
Apple truley have provided the best media event to date. They have taken everything they have learned from their latest range of mobile devices and the iOS and brought it to their core the Mac range. These are very exciting times we cannot wait to get our hands on the new Macbook, Lion and iLife ’11.
